Advocating for Research
In September of 2002, GPDA president was an invited speaker at the American Motility Society’s scientific meeting held in Galveston, TX. From this encounter, GPDA teamed-up with several members from the AMS and began planning for the first ever International Scientific Task Force meeting on Gastroparesis.
Our Task Force meeting was held in Orlando Florida in early 2003 and attended by Dr. Frank Hamilton, Branch Chief, Gastrointestinal Motility Program Director, of the Digestive Diseases Branch of the National Institutes of Health, NIDDK.
Immediately after this meeting, GPDA release a White Paper to congress and the NIDDK. GPDA and our members sent countless letters to congress and senators.
April 2, 2004, GPDA president and members from the gastroparesis task force were invited to present to the NIDDK acting Director, Dr. Stephen James, Dr. Frank Hamilton and others from the National Institutes of Health.
In December, 2005 the NIH announced a Request for Application (RFA) of 15 million dollars for a research consortium to study gastroparesis.
We at GPDA applaud the wisdom and vision of the NIH, Dr. Frank Hamilton and Dr. Stephen James. They have given hope to so many people suffering from gastroparesis and related digestive motility diseases.
